Planning – because every situation is different

Planning starts with a clear understanding of the work to be done. What are the expectations and challenges? How can you ensure that the task can be completed in the safest possible way?

As you will see, planning is not an A to B journey, but something much more dynamic – a continuous process of identifying and assessing the risks at every stage, even while making the cut. It is this understanding of the risks that steers your planning decisions – from the work methods you choose to the tools you use – as you aim to minimise the risks.

What are the largest risks based on what needs to be done? Are there hanging trees? Are roads and pathways secured? What work methods are preferred to reduce the largest risks? What tools do you need for your chosen work methods? What are the risks when using these tools and how can you mitigate them? There is a lot to consider and be aware of.

Careful planning is vital – nothing should be overlooked or left to chance. Do you and your team have the training, skills and tools needed to do the work? If in doubt, do not proceed until you know you are ready. Is everything going as planned? If not, then be prepared to adjust your plan. Safety first – always.
